Bone Broth 101 (& how to brew your own)

From exploring sourdough from scratch, homemade marshmellows & brewing nourishing bone broth, this past year, I have really fallen deeper in love with the kitchen. I have really enjoyed slowing down to savour the process of homemade even more than before & there are plenty of benefits to making things from scratch: knowing & mindfully choosing every ingredient, crafting foods that are fresh - meaning more nutrients, & no preservatives, stabilizers, or gums are used which have been linked to gut issues & autoimmune disorders.

Bone broth has been a staple for me this year. After my pregnancy loss, I was drinking homemade bone broth everyday to support my healing post D&C. And in my current pregnancy, I have been consuming it for it's amazing nutritional benefits for pregnancy & freezing some for postpartum as well. I love to use it for my soup bases in place of packaged or powdered broths or concentrates -- the flavour is SO MUCH BETTER & so much more nourishing. It's also a great way to pump up the protein when cooking grains - I love adding bone broth to my rice or quinoa instead of plain water.

Bone broth is a nutrient-dense ancient "elixir" made by simmering animal bones, typically with herbs, vegetables, and spices. It boasts many health benefits due to its rich nutritional profile, specifically valuable amino acids, collagen, gelatin, & trace minerals. Here's a list of some of the key benefits associated with consuming bone broth:

  1. Rich in nutrients: Bone broth contains various essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and other minerals that are crucial for overall health.

  2. Joint health: The gelatin and collagen from the bones may help support joint health and reduce joint pain and inflammation.

  3. Gut health: The amino acids and gelatin in bone broth support the health of the digestive system by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and healing the gut lining, potentially aiding in conditions like leaky gut syndrome.

  4. Promotes skin health: Collagen & hyaluronic acid in bone broth is beneficial for maintaining healthy skin by improving elasticity and hydration. It also promotes healthy aging, cell rejuvenation & skin firmness.

  5. Supports immune function: The amino acids, minerals, and other compounds in bone broth may support a healthy immune system.

  6. Assists in detoxification: Some compounds in bone broth may support the body's natural detoxification processes, helping to eliminate waste and toxins.

  7. Promotes better sleep: The amino acid glycine found in bone broth may have a calming effect, potentially improving sleep quality.

  8. Hair and nail health: The collagen and gelatin in bone broth may contribute to stronger and healthier hair and nails.

  9. Hydration: Rich in minerals & electrolytes in an easy to absorb for, consuming bone broth can contribute to overall hydration due to its water content, supporting healthy circulation, bone density, nerve-signaling functions, heart health as well as digestive health.

I have to admit, I have tried many store bought brands in an effort of convenience & the store bought stuff just isn't the same quality or taste, I much prefer to make it myself & luckily it's quite easy, just takes a bit of time but I promise you, it's absolutely worth it. The essential ingredients according to the founder of Weston A Price foundation is bones, fat, meat, vegetables & water.
